Google plans to launch an advanced protection programme. The aim is to help high profile Gmail users secure their accounts.
On Tuesday, Alphabet’s Google Inc said it would roll out an advance protection programme to help people who are at a higher risk of being targeted by sophisticated hackers.
Such people include journalists, political activists and government officials.
The feature of the advanced protection programme includes an option to require a physical USB security key which before each log-in would be connected to a desktop computer to verify the users identity.
It should be noted that mobile log-ins would require wireless devices and advanced protection users will have their data walled off from access by non Google third-party applications like Microsoft Outlook or the Apple iOS mail client.
Then the programme also includes a more detailed and laborious recovery process which can be used to prevent fraudulent access by sophisticated hackers who try to gain access by pretending they have been locked out.
Also, advanced protection users would have no backup log in method available if they lose their keys except the fuller account recovery process and Google has not specified what the recovery process would entail.
