MTN Conducted First Africa's 5G Technology Trial In Johannesburg

MTN has conducted a 5G technology and applications trial at its head office in Johannesburg in partnership with Ericsson.

The announcement came on Monday from the MTN headquarters in South Africa after the two companies signed a memorandum of understanding at AfriCom 2017, to work together on the rollout of 5G technologies in South Africa, One of the first of its kind in Africa.

Some Expert speaks: MTN received a temporary license of 800MHz of spectrum in the 15GHz band to conduct its trial, the test achieved a throughput (data transfer rate) of 20Gbps with a latency of fewer than 5 milliseconds (ms), which is the highest achieved on a mobile network in Africa. The 5G trial is based on commercially available baseband hardware and mobility is supported.

Speaking at the event, Chief Technology and Information Officer for MTN SA, Giovanni Chiarelli, said that 5G offered a whole new world of potential for South Africa and the continent.

"With 5G, remote healthcare through connected robots could offer world-class surgery in the most remote parts of the continent and the world. Self-driving cars could change the face of road safety, along with smart agriculture, smart mining and smart cities.
There is no doubt that it will offer the consumer higher speeds and lower latencies but to achieve this, we need the capability that comes with additional spectrum".

5G is one way, although a majority of us are not familiar with 4G LTE Speed.

The capability of the 5G network is as fast as to be able to transmit data up to 20GB per seconds, this incredibly fast and moves the mobile experience to a new level.
